AI-ready process
An AI-ready process is a business process that can be supported or partly automated with AI without the AI having to guess: it is documented as it really runs, has an owner, makes its decision rules and exceptions explicit, has the data each step needs, and has a known baseline. Readiness is a property of the process and its knowledge, not of the AI tool.
What makes a process AI-ready?
Beyond those basics, readiness also means a clear boundary: which tasks AI may assist with, which it may prepare for a person's review, and which stay with people. And every rule should be traceable to a source, so answers can be checked.
Processes tend to move up a simple ladder: known only in one head, written down, owned and reviewed, measured and standardised, and finally AI-assisted. Skipping steps is what makes pilots stall.
Not to be confused with AI-enabled software. A tool can be full of AI features while the process it supports is not ready for them.
Why it matters for SMEs
For example: a distributor wanted AI to draft answers about delivery terms. The data was fine, but nobody owned the terms and the exceptions for key accounts lived with two account managers. The first investment was capturing those exceptions, not the tool.
For SMEs, checking readiness before buying avoids the familiar conclusion that “AI doesn't work for us”. See AI pilots stall on undocumented processes.
AI-ready process in the MentX approach
MentX captures how your company really works: the knowledge of your key people and the processes they run. We offer both a hands-on service approach — mapping your processes and capturing the knowledge behind them, from meetings, workshops and a guided intake — and our own personality-aware knowledge base, with full source attribution, in your own Knowledge Space. We build on the tools you already use and add best-practice solutions where they fit.
Making processes ready for AI is what step three, capture your operations, is for. The AI-ready process checklist shows the checks; the full checklist is available on request.
